I was thinking about how one could hide a jailbreak from apple well enough to get a warranty. What would be some options? Could you encrypt the whole filesystem on ubuntu? Could you even shred the whole filesystem 100 times? If you did would you be able to restore? Sorry for all the questions, it was just a challenge by a guy I know to figure out how you could get the warranty for a jailbroken ipod with a cracked screen. (hypotheticaly, I would prpbably by a new ipod if mine actually broke)

Just restore a couple times after you run iWipe.
That should pretty well do it.

If you're trying to get your iPod replaced, just restore it.

Not really necessary. Apple doesn't make a big deal about it. As long as you restore once first, you won't have any issues. I've had 2 iPhone 3Gs, 1 3GS, 1 iPad, and 1 iPhone 4 replaced by Apple. All which were previously jail broken. Just did a simple restore before bringing them in.

Oh!! I've never returned anything to them. But I figured the way I posted would pretty well wipe out any trace of a jailbreak.

Yeah they're not looking that hard. Their customer service is top notch for a reason.

But actually I lied. The iPad I brought in to be replaced was still jailbroken. I used SBSettings to hide Cydia and any other jailbreak apps on my homescreen. I didn't plan on going to the Apple store that day so I didn't restore it. The guy plugged my iPad into his computer and ran some program. Looked up at the screen and I saw Cydia. I was like F*CK!! Lol So he was swiping through my homescreens looking for it. A simple search in Spotlight would have found it but he didn't bother. It didn't matter anyway because it was a hardware defect. Lot of dead pixels. He replaced it with a brand new iPad. :)

Yeah. He even asked me if I was jailbroken. I was like idk what that means. Then he just went on to say jailbreaking let's you do other things with your phone, but it can mess up your phone, so it voids your warranty if you do it. Then he was like but it's a hardware issue so I'm gonna replace it for you anyway.

It's not that. It's that if you're having a software issue, it most likely is because of some tweak you installed. That's why simply restoring it makes them honor the warranty again. Because if you restore it, it's back to the original software, and if you're still having a problem, it's a hardware defect for sure.

But as long as you're jailbroken, there's no way of knowing if it's hardware or software.

So I won't have to encrypt it ehn format it then shred the filesystem and then microwave it for a sec?! I guess if that ever happens I'll just restore and iwipe.
