I have a factory unlocked 3GS on 4.0.1 but I want to install cydia without jailbreaking it so I can have a factory unlocked iPhone  with cydia

Jailbreak allows access to the root which is what you need.

Just so you know, unlocking has nothing to do getting root access.

Actually that not true but you need root access. I guess who ever unlocked your phone does have root access. But you need it.

If it's factory unlocked then it was never locked, which means it didn't have to be unlocked

Your phone will always be unlike if done by the factory unlock  be unlocked  and if you jailbreak it like you should it will nit void your warranty as some ppl think next question dude keep them coming  [emoji-E057]  [emoji-E057]  [emoji-E057]

No it will stay unlocked, you don't have to worry about it becoming locked by jailbreaking. And jailbreaking will void the warranty but you can always just do a restore back to stock and they will never know.
