for those who dont have a data plan (like me) you will want to disable data use on your phone, unless you wanna pay those crazy overage fees (like 1 cent per kb)
Your iPhone has an APN number which is used to connect to the internet, and use data via 3G or edge
To change your APN number go on safari and type this address in: www.unlockit.co.nz
you will have two options: disable data (fake APN)
custom APN
Disable Data: as your iphone needs a valid APN to actually connect, this will set it to something random so that it will not connect (thus no data use)
Custom APN: this will allow you to set your own custom APN or choose a standard one in the pull down menu.
To remove a custom or fake APN number: go to settings, general, then click "profiles", and then press "remove"
i think that covers it... you can also enable tethering and mms with this (non-att carriers)
there is also a fake apn toggle for sbsettings available on cydia
Disable data use on the iPhone (fake APN)

What didn't work? You went to that site? Chose fake apn, then hit install. Then under settings... General... Profile should say fake apn

but does changing the APN and disabling data actually remove the data charges? what does AT&T care if you're using the data service or not - they'll still charge you right?

I don't think charging works that way.
To be able to charge an account, they need an account no. (this would be your phone no.) The APN setting is a configuration that tells your iPhone to connect using the details in the setting. It is usually 1 setting per carrier and not 1 setting per subscriber.
so if you have an AT&T carrier and say setup an APN setting from Timbuktu, it just tells your phone to try to connect through that setting if you need to access cellular data. And since your carrier and your settings do not match, no charges will be billed to you.
I did this and now I do not have the irritating message popping up.

Yea it does and you are right AT&T uses 2 apns for Internet... Along with an apn for your visual voicemail... And if you have a blackberry you have a blackberry apn for email....
