I know most of you may think, "downgrading ios5 firmware? that's impossible! How can that happen?". This may have been true until just now. A new program called iFaith just came out and now has made it possible through a new form of technology called ssh dumping. With ssh dumping you can get a nice clean restore to any firmware you want without ever affecting baseband. Even if the fimware is no longer signed by apple. In order to do this you must first make sure your host file is restored. You can restore your host file by going to this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297 and following the instructions under the "blocked by configuration" heading. If your a mac user you may have to borrow a windows computer from a friend or use a virtual machine. But once the custom firmware is created you can use it to restore or downgrade on any computer you want.

If you own Windows:
1. Download ifaith from http://ih8sn0w.com/
2. Plug your phone in
3. Open ifaith and click dump ssh blobs and follow instructions
4. Download ipsw firmware of choice at http://www.iphonefir...wares-download/ if download show up as zip file, go to control panel, folder options and uncheck "hide extentions for known file type. Then rename the file with a .ipsw intead of .zip
5. Open ifaith again
6. Click build signed ipsw w/blobs.
7. Click continue on prompt for blob file
8. On ipsw prompt click browse for ipsw and load the firmware you just downloaded.
9. Click continue and wait for firmware to cook. Once done, you'll notice a new firmware file that begins with a bunch of numbers and has the word ifaith in it.
10. Backup up all your apps in itunes by right clicking the ipod icon on the left and clicking backup. Backup all your cydia apps with your favorite backup app (I reccomend pkgbackup).
11. Go to ifaith and click pwned dfu and follow instructions
12. Go to itunes, hold shift and click restore.
13. Select the ipsw that ifaith created.
14. Download redsn0w at http://www.redsn0w.u...eak-guides.html
15. Once restoration is done, open redsn0w click jailbreak and follow prompts.

If you own Mac:

1. Download tinyumbrellah at http://thefirmwareum...a.blogspot.com/
2. Plug your ipod in, open tiny umbrellah and click save ssh
3. Go to go menu and select go to folder
4. type /Users/$home/.shsh ($home being the name you have given to your home folder)
5. Find the .shsh file with the ipsw of choice in the name
6. Copy that .shsh file on to a flash drive
7. Borrow a friend's windows computer and use ifaith
8. Download the ipsw of choice from http://www.iphonefir...wares-download/
9. Click build signed ipsw with blobs
10. browse for the .shsh file you copied on your flash drive
11. click continue
12. Browse for chosen firmware downloaded
13. When firmware is done cooking put the custom firmware on your flashdrive
14. On your mac back up all your apps and insert flash drive
15. Download redsn0w at http://www.redsn0w.u...eak-guides.html
16. Open redsn0w click extra features, click pwned dfu mode and follow prompts
17. Open itunes hold option and click restore and select the custom firmware on flash drive.
18. Once restoration is done, open redsn0w click jailbreak and follow prompts.

I know. But you'd be surprised how many people still have not heard about it.
