Hello, i know very little about networking and i was wondering if someone could help?

What we want to do is set up a proper server to act as a router and nas storage drive. I'm under the impression that this could potentially give is better transfer speeds and even internet speeds throughout the house, over the conventional cheapo router your cable supplier provides?

I dont really know where to start with this. I have a computer in mind to act as the server, but are there any hardware requirements for this to work as well, or any better than a standard router? Obviously i will need a good network card (help with this would be nice. specs, ect) and/or a decent network hub. We have a cable modem (from provider) that we were looking to connect to the server, and then route throughout the house.

I dont know what to do in regards to an OS. We want the server to be discoverable by devices like smart TV's and blu ray players that can "see" nas enclosures and stream media from them. I also want to be able to have no keyboard, mouse or monitor on the server after initial setup, so maybe theres a special OS for this where it can be dealt with remotely. We want the storage side of the server to be a raid arrangement. Now in mac OS X i am able to set up a software driven concatenated raid array. I am able to add drives whenever i want to the array without formatting all of the drives (just the new one). This is definitely something we will require as we only have a couple of TB's to through in there at the moment, but plan to add more as and when needed.

I have probably left a bunch of stuff out, so if you notice anything please bring it up. I look forward to some help on this one, i know i have seen at least a couple of people here say they do this for a living.

Thanks,
Chris

You have a great idea going, but I have no clue as to how to do that
