I bought some cheap car charger/cable/dock stand copies and found the following.

All cables charged from the car lighter socket. All cables charged from the wall wart. None of them would charge or sync with the PC.

I thought they may be charge only cables (so should have at least done that on the PC) but I just got device not recognised msg.

As a last resort I tried the dock stand with the original apple cable and got device not recognised. This was with the cable in the same port as usual on my powered hub. So I removed the dock (leaving the cable in the same usb port) put it back directly into phone and it was fine. I tried reloading drivers with no change.

The dock is a simple pass through. The only reason it can fail to work (in theory) is a broken,crossed or shorted connection. If this were the case then it will never work and is just bin filler.

Whilst removing them to said bin I spotted the front mounted USB port that I had forgotten was even on the PC and thought "I'll give it one last go in there".

The damm thing worked just fine!!!

Today I was testing some 30 pin extension cables. I new a previous one had worked on the last configuration above but todays lightbulb moment was to try it on the original set up.


So, set up as follows this is what happened.

PC - Belkin 7 port powered hub - genuine Apple cable - iPhone 4s = works fine no problems, as it has from new.

PC - Belkin 7 port powered hub - cheap copy cable - iPhone 4s = USB not recognised and no connections or functions, as found last time.

PC - Belkin 7 port powered hub - genuine Apple cable - iPhone 4s - cheap dock stand = USB not recognised and no connections or functions, why?

PC - Belkin 7 port powered hub - genuine Apple cable - iPhone 4s - 30 pin extension cable = works fine no problems.

PC - Belkin 7 port powered hub - genuine Apple cable - iPhone 4s - 30 pin extension cable - cheap dock stand = works fine no problems, HOW?

The dock stand will not work with any of my cables in the hub yet, when the extension is fitted it suddenly works.

Can anyone shine any light on this? I'd kinda like to get the dock stand running via the hub coz I'm a bit OCD about cable runs and the front mounted USB is keeping me awake haha.

Delete the launch daemon regarding incapabilities with third party chargers. I don't remember which one this is off the top of my head
