Cancelled Terra Nova Could Live on at Netflix
The sci-fi series has a chance for resurrection.
Things with Terra Nova just got more interesting. The sci-fi series was cancelled by FOX this week, among reports that 20th Century Fox TV (who produced the series) were going to attempt to shop it to other networks. But given the history of genre shows of this type and other cancelled series that were shopped around by producers, only to find no buyers, it was difficult to see Terra Nova finding any genuine interest from other outlets.
Now though, Deadline is reporting that preliminary conversations have opened between 20th and Netflix about continuing the series. Deadline stresses the "preliminary" part of this and that no actual negotiations have begun, but it seems there is at least a sliver of hope Terra Nova could continue. The obstacle, not surprisingly, is likely to be the cost of Terra Nova, which is a very expensive series – one of the reasons FOX probably pulled the plug on it, despite it getting decent, if not great, ratings.
Could 20th and Netflix find a way to budget the series that has all parties happy? Netflix were ultimately the ones to resurrect Arrested Development with 20th (new episodes begin production this year), but that show doesn't have the production hurdles and special effects required for Terra Nova. Which is to say, fans of the show shouldn't be holding their breath quite yet, but it looks like there is at least a better chance than it appeared earlier this week.
