A home button isn't outdated! That's why I do not like Kindle Fire, it's hard to get to menu.

You've never used gestures on an iPad then. A four/five finger pinch brings you back to the homescreen, a four/five finger swipe up reveals the task switcher, and a four/five finger swipe left/right switches between recent apps.
