With the developers preview of OS X Mountain Lion being released, iMessages is being integrated into OS X. Great? But why does this mean iOS will be getting a file manager? Well in OS X 10.8 (dev preview at least) a user noticed that you are able to send any file type via iMessages. As we know everything is synced via iCloud, so these previously unfriendly formats must have some kind of management system in iOS. This is, of course, assuming apple will be allowing iOS to see these formats at all.

What do you guys think?

I don't see that as any kind of proof iOS is getting a user-accessible file system, but I sure hope it happens.

So you think we will just not see the files on iOS devices? The guy was able to send a .DMG to himself, then open it in the OS X version of iMessages. It would suck if the messages just didn't appear, or didn't let you do anything with them.

I assume it won't be viewable on iDevices, not really any reason to be able to see a .DMG file on it anyway or really any other type of file besides a picture or video.

I wasn't assuming we would be able to mount it or anything (lol, mount ). I just thought maybe we have a place to store them or whatever. Rename, resend, upload and stuff like that.

Well that's how it is now so that's not a reason it would change.

But apple are bumming off of this whole integration thing. I don't really see the point in allowing this if it isn't cross platform. Most other OS's have a file manager, it's about time apple offered one.

Apples methods of integration don't match anyone else's perceptions of it. If they were to integrate it, expect Mac OS to lose features rather than iOS gaining any.

Yer but look how apple have started to move away from the simplicity approach. I guess im just hoping.
Now apple have a completely solid, fluid OS, it makes sense that they will add this kind of stuff. i seriously see a finder equivalent coming to iOS. It's in there interest, think how much stuff is possible when iOS has a file browser. Safari uploads and download, and this iMessages/iCloud ting. Plus whole bunch of other stuff i cant think of right now. lol.

Not gonna happen. If anything, the app will store all the attachments in its sandbox. There isn't a need for a file manager. Also, apples file system is waay too complicated for the average user. It's not gonna happen

Why would it have to be complicated at all? It's not like i expect them to release a file manager that lets you look at everything, just like a my documents kinda thing.

That's not a file manager then. We have hundreds of apps that can do this -__-

Sending files from app to app is a terrible alternative to a file system.
