iOS5 Memory After Jailbreak on 4S

Now that I've jailbroken my 4S, I can finally see what the memory usage is like. I noticed that after the fresh jailbreak the memory was sitting around 250mb(almost half the total amount of RAM. I've been loading lots of apps from cydia like ISX, Scrolling Board, Folder Enhancer, etc. I've seen my memory drop down to as little as 10mb.

The thing is, I'm not sure if I should really be concerned about it. Does iOS5 manage memory differently/better than in the past? I haven't necessarily noticed any degradation in performance even when playing memory intensive games and switching between a lot of apps.

I read an article recently that explained how multitasking works in iOS5 and it really changed the way I viewed the whole thing. I used to obsess about what apps were sitting in the multitaskbar and would close a lot of them all the time. But now, I don't touch them at all because iOS manages everything on its own. I'm not sure what would happen if you throw Backgrounder in the mix though.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Apps will close when ram is low or when more is needed whether they are in the tray or not.

So long as you're not encountering stability issues or lockups then it's fine and just ignore it :)

Yeah, I guess it's just because now I can see it, and for some reason it irks me to see such little memory available. Old habits die hard, right? :)

250 mb after a fresh jailbreak on a 4s? That's way low. I'm running an iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0.1 with more than a few tweaks running and with all processes killed I sit around 310 mb. Kill all process in sbsettings and hit free up memory and see what it says.

You don't need to be jailbroken to view available RAM. There are apps that will show you that and apps that help you free some.

Better to jus look up on the screen than opening an app every time

But it is jailbroken. Indicating there's a problem with a tweak/package.

I had 22MB with just settings , iMessages and safari

Just closed them and pressed free memory and now I got 250MB

Never noticed an issue so I see the OS is handling the ram really well

Just did a reboot. After everything loaded free memory was at 250mb. I did a free memory via sbsettings and it jumped up to 330mb. I'm sure the more I go about using it now the memory will quickly drop.

Ok but that doesn't really help him since he is jailbroken. But I see what you are saying.

What I've noticed is I sit around 50mb on my jailbroken 4S after a reboot I sit around 310mb. I've noticed battery life with 310mb is better but my phone seems to open stuff up faster when I'm sitting lower due to apps I had running in the background aka suspended state. Only time I free up memory is if I know my phone will be sitting for while.

You have a 4s, so do I. I have tons of apps open and even play gta3 while they are open. I never run into stability issues. It's always smooth. I love this phone.

The A5 chip can handle the load ;)

So even tho your ram is low you more then likely won't see any lag
