after looking around i have sourced a cheap i7 i5 760s online. now when i search for compatibility with my board (GA-H55M-UD2H), it mentions the 760, but not the 760s? now does that mean it's not compatible or what?

Thanks.

sorry yes it's an i5.
the i7 is the 860s which i know works with my board.

i was also wondering what the "s" means?

and the i5 is £100 and the i7 is £140. do you think the i7 is worth £40 more? this is of course, assuming the i5 will also be compatible.

Thanks for helping.

well it depends. sometimes you get an i5 with good configurations meaning you get the best i5 for the price of the worst i7. in that case it does not really matter which cpu you use. i7 is a big hype because it's new and powerful but you get really good i5 for the same price.

Anyway cpu is about processing stuff. Meaning if you do a lot of processing the higher the tact the better

3.0Ghz+ is always good for new games, rendering etc.

To be honest I would go with a good i5.

dont go with the i7? i assumed it was better? i can always overclock it to 3.00+ safely as the turbo boost exceeds 3.00. i have a nice after market heatsink too, so overclocking is no problem. even with the overclock you would choose an i5?

anyone else wanna chip in?
thanks

yeah overclocking is fine with every cpu. but it slowly kills you cpu. really as a normal user who only plays games you won't even feel a difference between i5 or i7. It's not my decision to make but if I were you I would buy the i5 because it can be overclock up to 3.33GHz which is really good and fast for a midrange computer.

The i7 has a lot of new features on board which most of them as a regular user you wouldn't even notice. It's more like a "nice to have" thingy.

If you've got the needed cash go ahead and buy the i7 but I'll assure you as a normal user the i5 is fine too.

the i5 is not compatible though is it?
and if the i7 has more power then that would be good as my i5 650 struggled with building my code into an app in xcode. i say struggled... it wasn't instant lol

i do work with illustrator and photoshop a little also where perhaps i might see the benefit of the i7? no gaming at all.

yea well I haven't checked with your MB yet but I guess you could give the i7 a try. I mean it has nice features when it comes to processing which you will be doing alot when you code an app.

coding, rendering or games (which you don't need) need a lot of processing power which could lead me to tell you to buy the i7 :)

alright when it comes to motherboards the important thing is you check which socket is used. if let's say the i7 needs a 1156 you need a mainboard with an 1156 socket to fix it. if the page you gave me is your mb it's compataible with you MB.

yes that's right, i knew the i7 would work. i was just unsure why it didn't list the i5 760 "s" version but did the normal one? i figured it should work?

nevermind i'm going for the i7 now.

Thanks

i wouldn't buy a 1156 mobo now anyways, wait for intels next release or get a 2011 mobo. it just worked out good for me in my situation.
