I think this was a feature in iOS2 and 3 but was removed in 4 where you could simply hold home to return to springboard.

I may be on my own little planet with that one but I vaguely recall it.

This works for me Temporarily. I was looking around and saw a few videos and decided to try it out. Power off phone. Put a few drops of rubbing alcohol on the home button and press it repeatedly, I pushed about 75-100 times. Let it try for 10m then power on. My home button works like new

If you do that, only use 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. And be aware of the risks.
