Jailbreak "Dream Team" to Present at Hack In the Box Conference

The "Dream Team" that brought you the iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak is presenting at HITBSecConf in Amsterdam on May 21 - 25th. The team includes p0sixninja, MuscleNerd and pod2g.

The main aim of our conferences has always been to enable the dissemination, discussion and sharing of deep knowledge network security information. Our main focus is on new and groundbreaking attack and defense methods that have not been seen or discussed in public before. HITBSecConf events bring together a unique mix of security professionals, researchers, law enforcement and members of the hacker underground under one roof and our flagship event in Malaysia sees over 1000 attendees.

The event runs over a 4 day period with 2 days of intensive hands on training sessions followed by a two-day conference with either three or four concurrent tracks inclusive of a hands on lab session (HITB Labs) and 15 minute lightning talks (HITB SIGINT). The HITB Labs caters for only 50-100 attendees and these sessions are intensive, hands-on presentations that require audience interaction. The HITB SIGINT (Signal Intelligence/Interrupt) sessions on the other hand, are designed to provide a quick 15 minute overview for material and research that's 'up and coming' - stuff that isn't quite ready for the mainstream tracks of the conference but deserve a mention nonetheless.

Apple Fighting Back against Spire

It seems apple aren't keen on Spire and it's growing popularity. So much so that they're enforcing more rules to break it for Spire users.

Previously, you only needed Spire, a host and a certificate and you were away. Now Apple have added a "SetActivationToken" which has disabled Siri for almost everyone on illegitimate devices.

A temporary (hopefully) workaround of deleting "com.apple.assistant.plist" from "/var/mobile/library/preferences" on the device appears to resolve the issue for now, but will this become another game of cat and mouse for apple, just like in Jailbreaking?

No doubt we'll soon find out!

Sprint Sells 1.8 Million iPhones In 4th Quarter

Sprint is reporting 1.8 million iPhones were sold in the 4th quarter of 2011, with 40% of those purchased by new customers. In comparison, AT&T sold 7.6 million and Verizon sold 4.2 million during the same period. This was the first quarter Sprint had the iPhone available and Sprint is the 3rd largest U.S. carrier so that puts the number in some perspective.

Our strong fourth quarter performance illustrates the power of matching iconic devices like the iPhone with our simple, unlimited plans and industry-leading customer experience,” said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO. “During the past year, Sprint added more than 5 million net new customers and grew wireless service revenue by more than 5 percent, including 17 percent for the Sprint platform. This momentum gives us confidence as we execute our Network Vision upgrade and 4G LTE roll-out.”

The company continued to rapidly grow the number of prepaid and wholesale and affiliate subscribers in the fourth quarter. Prepaid net additions were 507,000 bringing total prepaid subscribers to nearly 14.8 million at the end of 2011, an increase of 20 percent since the end of 2010. Net additions of 954,000 for wholesale and affiliates in the fourth quarter were the highest in seven years.

Additionally, the company reported a net loss of $1.3 billion and a diluted loss of $.43 per share for the quarter, which includes pre-tax, non-cash charges of $241 million, or $.08 per share, consisting of asset and impairment charges of $78 million on property, plant and equipment, $135 million on Sprint’s investment in Clearwire and $28 million in severance costs.

Motorola's German iDevice Ban Suspended

Apple has won an appeal to have the ban on sales of certain models of iPhone and iPad in the country. An appeals court lifted the ban after Apple made a new payments offer. Germans however, aren't out of the water yet. They may lose their push notifications for iCloud mail in a separate court ruling.

The iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 had all been affected, but not its newer iPhone 4S. All 3G models of the iPad were involved, but not their wi-fi-only counterparts such as the iPod touch.

The suspension may only last a few weeks tops, but Apple are able to resume sales in the meantime.

Florian Mueller, who was present at the review was quoted to have said the bond was likely to be around $158million or £100million:
A suspension like this is available only against a bond, but Apple is almost drowning in cash and obviously won't have had a problem with obtaining and posting a bond

Motorola licenses the patent to other companies on Frand (fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory) terms. The patent itself relates to:

Motorola seemed rather put out by the result and signalled their intention to restore the ban.

Apple were, understandably, rather pleased by this result. Their announcement afterwards saying that:

iPod Nano Prototype With Camera Leaked

There's been a lot of buzzing in the past 24 hours about some pictures that were leaked of a prototype iPod Nano that has a camera. The latest reports are showing that there is still a good amount of work to be done to make it final.

This is the latest from M.I.C. Gadget:

According to our factory sources, Apple have problems with the lens aperture for the next-gen iPod nano, the iris is not functioning correctly to allow the advantages of the low aperture to be utilized. Every shot was overexposed. Apple intends to correct its mistake, but the problem still exists in this prototype that is manufactured two months ago. What's more, a 2-megapixel camera was tested, but it was unsatisfactory - the photos look washed-out and flat. The good news is… this 2-month-old prototype is close to final product, the UI is done.

This isn't the first time an iPod Nano prototype with a camera has been rumored. Back in May there were pictures of a prototype that eliminated the clip. In November Apple filed a patent on a clip that had a hole in the clip to allow the camera to see through it.

New data was released yesterday (Monday) that stated that 2011's Q4 PC sales leader was indeed Apple! Over HP and Dell, etc., you ask? Well... Kind of. This data includes tablets as personal computers, therefor, including iPad sales with the MacBooks and iMacs, Apple is number one.

Well some of you may think of that as unfair, and as a matter of fact, you aren't alone. Most of the journalists who covered this information thought that the iPad shouldn't be considered a PC... But, er... What necessarily is a personal computer?

Well, in general, a computer is an electronic device that processes information and tasks... And for technicality kids, it has to use binary. Well, the iPad does all that, so why are you complaining? People compared it to other operating systems and stated that it couldn't do most of the things that those OS's can, but that is irrelevant to whether it is a computer or not, isn't it? I mean, computers way back in the day could never run half of those programs, so that reason is void. An iPad is infact a personal computer.

Feel free to discuss my verdict, but that's my view, with a bit of interesting news.

T-Mobile To Start Offering Additional Support for iPhone Starting Today?

According to TMONews, T-Mobile will start offering additional support to its million customers that use unlocked iPhones on their network. There's a screenshot of the leaked document above.

Basically they are going to have more iPhone specific information for their customers and customer support to help iPhone users. They are also asking their reps to read up and learn the information to be more helpful.

Starting on January 30th, T-Mobile will "begin offering additional support to customers using an Apple iPhone on our network." T-Mobile's added iPhone support will include "common procedures, information about feature and specifications and other basic device questions." T-Mobile is implementing these changes to support the 1 million plus users on the Magenta network with unlocked iPhones.

Also it has been rumored that the next iPhone will expand it's frequency range to be able to offer 3G to other carriers such as T-Mobile. Currently T-Mobile users can only access the EDGE network.

I'm on an unofficial carrier (not T-Mobile) and I am listed as having an "other" smartphone. There's no documentation or support on my carrier's site. When I've had to deal with their support it's been mostly for billing changes and I've never had them help, or offer help, or even ask what phone I have.

Anyone here on T-Mobile have any success or assistance from them regarding your iPhone?

Redsn0w Updated to Fix iBooks Issues

The long trusted jailbreak tool redsn0w has been updated again to fix iBooks issues. The iPhone Dev-Team, and particularly planetbeing this time, have issued the update which addresses an issue some have been having with DRM and iBooks.

redsn0w version b5 incorporates yet another fix for iBooks, this time involving DRM. @planetbeing wrote a utility called "crazeles" that overcomes jailbreak detection by iBooks that would cause about 10% of images to show incorrectly. This fix is similar to the "hunnypot" fix that @comex wrote for the 4.x jailbreak. As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it's the same set of files no matter which way you choose).

In related news Corona, the Cydia tweak that allows your tethered jailbreak to be untethered, has also been updated to fix this issue. If you have installed the Cydia tweak you will see an update in Cydia for the tweak (if you haven't already).

Just hired a server admin to reconfigure my entire server and optimize all sites on it. He is close to done and HOPEFULLY we will see no more down time. I know it was getting ridiculous but this should solve the problem. It really was nothing to do with iHMi but with another site on the server that is just really old and doesn't run right. Apple takes back the lead of smartphone sales from Samsung

While being too busy to post a lot of news (mother is pretty sick), I'll still keep you updated.

Well, since Q3 '11 was a rough patch for Apple, with the 4S not yet released, Samsung took back the lead. Now in Q4, with the Apple 4S and hype mixed with nostalgia is on the loose, as the image (from MacRumors) states, Apple finally surpasses Samsung once again.

With all these lawsuits, it's cool to see who really shows on top

Jailbreaking: Soon to be illegal again?

I guess I speak for a lot of Internet, iPhone,iPad or iPod users when saying that recently there's lots of changes coming up.

First Sopa and Pipa kicked in and created a public outrage all around the world followed by the takedown of the well-known web sharing client Megaupload and retaliation coups by Anonymous. Lots of trouble lies still ahead as it has yet to be decided what happens to ACTA (a far more aggressive anti-piracy law).

Now even more chocking news came up to the surface as Redmondpie released an article about some changes concerning jailbreaking & unlocking.

In 2010 the act of Jailbreaking was declared to be legal in the United States. This was a huge setback for Apple as they invested a high amount of money into anti-jailbreak policies and propaganda.

They claim that third-party tweaks might influence you iOS experience in any way possible. However we all know that lots of Apple's firmware releases contain tweaks that were once only available in Cydia.

We all awaited that day when jailbreaking became legal and hence we have to sign the new petition to keep it that way.
The petition has been made by the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) which defends the act of jailbreaking. Furthermore it is important to know that the iPad is not yet covered under the ruling of 2010 meaning it is not yet legal to jailbreak your iPad.

So sign the petition to avoid a setback for third-party developers and you as user. To join you simply have to go to the EFF's webpage and and comment to the Copyright Office with the links provide of the EFF page.

Forum moved to new server

Well this is the third time I've written this because there is some unknown bug with the server that is being sorted right now. You may have noticed that the forum was going from very fast to very slow and that your new posts were not showing. Hopefully this period is over and everything will be back to normal now. I have emailed my hosting company and they are working on it and right now it looks like everything is coming back to normal.

Sorry for me downtime it was only supposed to be about 2 hours and it turned into about 8.

Please post all bugs you find here so I can get them fixed asap.

350k textbooks already downloaded from iBooks store

iBooks2 revolutionary textbooks, already 350,000+ downloaded!

iBooks2 has only just been released, and 350,000 textbooks have already reportedly been sold! This information is reported from Global Equities Research. GER monitors the downloads using a proprietary tracking system, which estimates this number.

They also estimate that iBooks Author, a free textbook creator for Mac, has had over 90,000 downloads as well. A pretty interesting fact about publishers distributing their textbooks thru the iBooks store, is that they will actually make more profit than they used to, with decreased production cost and increased buyers. Apple seems to be off to a good start, here.

iBooks2 Announced (a few days ago, actually...)

You guys are really falling far behind... iBooks2 has recently been announced and has a bunch of new features.

Instead of being a bore and going over them myself, I'll let this little video they already put together for us to explain.

New, Improved UI; new libraries with interesting features; and my personal favorite: interactive textbooks!

Looks great if they can pull it together. I already love iBooks and actually use it constantly. Can't wait to see who takes advantage of the new interactive features.

Maybe it's time to get back into reading?

Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Released

The A5 jailbreak has finally been released! All of the patience and persistence has paid off. You can now jailbreak your iPad 2 and iPhone 4S untethered. Earlier we posted it was coming soon and sure enough it was.

Here are a few things to remember:

It jailbreaks iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1
It jailbreaks iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1
If you want an unlock on iPhone 4S it is best to stay on 5.0

A5 Jailbreak Update from "Dream Team"

There's been a lot of small updates and posts about the imminent jailbreak of iPhone 4S and iPad 2. This time there's a pretty big update. There's still no time frame as to when it's released but it seems closer than ever.

The "dream team" of devs, which includes pod2g and MuscleNerd among others, have been working on cracking the A5 chip in iPhone 4s and iPad 2 for months now. Right now they are just fixing bugs and packaging it to ensure a clean release.

Some of the highlights from the latest post on the Dev-Team's blog include:

They will package the jailbreak in several formats to give lots of jailbreak options
It will jailbreak iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1
It will jailbreak iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1
If you want an unlock on iPhone 4S it is best to stay on 5.0
They have created an optional collective contribution option so if you wish to contribute to the team you can do so

This is a little scary I know, but the chance you break something is really small, since we made lots of tests to verify the process on different devices. But it is the first time we use the backup / restore functions of iTunes to install software, and there are maybe things we are not aware of.

As you already know, different security researchers put a lot of energy to work out the different issues we had to install the untether on new devices.

iOS 5.1 b3 Reveals iPad 3 and Facebook Integration in iOS

One of the main keynote points of iOS 5 was the twitter intergration. Now Facebook will be integrated within the iPad 3.

There have been many rumors about the release of iPad 3 by the end of March of this year. Digitimes, also found the code name of iPad 3 as J1AP and J2AP which shows up the Wi-Fi and 3G iPad 3. Android and Windows Phone have Facebook integration as the rival of Smart phones, iOS should also have that integration. iOS 4 was set to have Facebook integration, but due to problems, it wasn't successful. But now we see that it might be possible with the release of updated iOS 6.

Apple Has 250 iNinjas Spying the Competition at CES

Don’t think Apple is not at CES. They are there, everywhere. You can’t see them, but 250 stealth Apple employees are at CES 2012. They are not there to show things. They are there to voraciously analyse the competition.

Paid Content’s Tom Krazit bumped into none other than Greg Joswiak, head of iOS product marketing for Apple:

“While wandering around the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center Tuesday, I bumped into Greg Joswiak, head of iOS product marketing for Apple, just outside of Sony’s booth. Joz, as he’s known within the Apple community, grinned sheepishly upon being recognised by a reporter and stopped to chat for a few minutes."

Apparently he wasn’t impressed by Sony’s booth, he told Krazit.

Mike Elgan points out what’s only logical: “a common misconception about Apple is that the company doesn’t pay attention to the competition and remains aloof from what’s happening in the rest of the industry.” Sure, paying attention is one thing. All companies pay attention. All companies send scouts to other companies’ booths and events. But sending a small army of 250 people to comb the halls at CES is a lot more than just paying attention.

So yes, Apple may ignore CES for show and tell. But they are not ignoring what’s cooking in Vegas. They are very interested in it. To see what’s hot, what’s wrong, where everyone else thinks things are going. If you are at CES, look at their badges.
